The subsurface beneath Manhattan can only support so much. This is especially true when you consider the drilling and excavation for foundations, utilities, and subways. I've been concerned for some time that these coastal cities are going to begin experiencing catastrophic structural failures in their buildings without any help from weather or earthquakes. Just pure soil failure.

Even new civil engineering students know that you must always build a foundation over a stable layer (bedrock, for example), using deep piles if necessary. This whole thing about “soil improvement” is just a hilarious, unproven-with-skyscrapers technology gimmick to justify their expensive simulations, jobs, and ridiculous contracts, at the cost of investors, residents and the city itself.

Gratifyingly greater percentage of grown up engineering based comments so far and even better, there are very few shout them down angry rants jumping on to the backs of those who do mention the mass movement of people. At present I'd say that such a bridge is still within the realms of a solution looking for a problem. Of course, it could be a case of Build it and they will come. But for now and having read every comment, I tend to agree that the flow of commerce tends to be at 90° to any bridge. Neither Europe nor Africa imports and exports vast quantities of goods on the polar axis, most traffic is East - West. Unless and until the continent of the future that is Africa begins to realise its huge potential, the present state of solution looking for a problem will annoyingly remain.

IT was a piece of Liberal party corruption to put money in the pockets of selected liberal supporters . No one in the West wants the airport there where the planes will end up polluting the major Sydney water supply Warragamba dam and the intermediate reseviour at prospect . There is no rail freight line scheduled for the airport nor a direct passenger rail link Because of the insufficient public transport in the western growth region so it will take around 2 hours by road to get to & from it during daylight hours . It will take around 300 B double tankers to supply fuel which will further congest the roads that will not be big enough to handle the projected volumes . The land around it was not "undeveloped wasteland" but actively farmed producing much of the fresh food, particularly leafy greens consumed in Sydney. The 'Modern waste water management " is another disaster as the overflow which can be massive will discharge into the Nepean river up stream of the Wallacia weir so cause extensive flooding of the upper & lower Nepean river plus drastically add to the floods on the Hawkesbury particularly the city of Penrith which will flood much much more frequently because all of the water that previously would have soaked into the working farm land eventually flowing into the Hawksbury river via South Creek which is substantially down stream of major flood choke points will now race off the massive sealed catchment and overflow into the rivers . The airport is not wanted nor needed . The problem with Australian aviation is the capital city Canberra does not have an international airport big enough to take large modern jets so all of the international business & government delegates that need to come to Canberra to engage with the government have to arrive via Sydney or Melbourne then get a connecting domestic flight to Canberra. Sydneys problem is a city of 4 million has only 1 alternative domestic airport to Mascot and that is at Bankstown which is also at capacity . Wha t was needed was the Sydney -Goulburn- Canberra-Albury-Melbourne fast train link that has been on the drawing boards for 50 years but gets vetoed in order to protect the property prices in Sydney & Melbourne . From the 80's on the City of Goulburn was begging to have the airport built there but the various governments found every slease bag reason why it would not be allowed to be built, even if 100% privately funded . IT would surprise you in particular , because your research is garbage the the heaviest trafficked air route in the world in Melbourne - Canberra , not NY to LA and the Sydney - Canberra route comes in at number 12 . Add to that getting to it will be a disaster and distributing freight from it will be a bigger disaster as Badgerys Creek to Palm Beach will be a full days work for a truck driver . As of now only some 10th rate Chinese airlines are the only ones seeking landing slots at Badgerys Creek and it will be a massive white elephant . Since Avalon in Victoria has been upgraded to international status as has Newcastle . And of course to prove just how corrupt the whole procedure was from start to finish . The day the final selection was announced all of the land under the proposed flight paths got sold off as it could not be used for growing vegetables but there were no development restrictions so because this was cheap "airport affected" land shifty developers ( all of who line government pockets ) bought this land and built over 70,000 residential houses under the flight paths which have of course been changed to the point of making the night flights do a 270 degree turn from 300 feet elevation making the flight path almost as dangerous as Sans Paulo

The European Invaders have made one of the most beautiful Continents in the World into a nightmarish abomination of concrete, glass and steel. But you have missed the point!! HS2 is only and wholly about capacity. It uses higher speed technology simply because that is current technology world wide and which is in use in over 40 nations with which the UK needs to compete. In the UK we have a disastrous relic in rail engineering such that much line maintenance currently requires London stations to be closed. We have an urgent need to expand all UK port facilities and this is now nearly complete with (for example) stations like Southampton and much E-W freight being expanded to accommodate greater freight capacity. If that is to operate sensibly and be expandable in the future there is a need to further separate freight and passenger traffic. THAT is the purpose behind HS2". That is the reason a start was made in the South. That is why Manchester and the North of the UK were considered less essential at the outset. To abandon HS2 is to risk beggaring the UK economy - especially in the North. Those who advocate abandonment are really voting to put a limit on the UK economy, to perpetuate the North South divide and worse, by the absence of any alternative for the North, to making Scottish businesses increasingly unviable. Really good thinking that.
